Maybe it's because of the fact that the people who say these things are the ones closest to us or maybe it's just the fact that we, as humans, can have our minds so easily changed with just a couple of words. Though we may know these words aren't true and shouldn't believe them, we subconsciously do. Over a period of time, the more that people say these words or even just the more times that one person says it, we start to eventually believe everything him/she/they say. We value others opinions of ourselves more than we value our own opinion of ourselves. And it's this, that makes our society so fucked up; the fact that we would believe someone else's words over our own, that someone else's words can make you doubt yourself and that someone else's opinion of you seems to be more important than your own.
